Thanks very much to the National Lottery Community Fund for awarding Westminster Befriend a Family £8,600 to develop a new online Learning Portal.
Helping Many More Families
This is really exciting news as it means we will soon be able to train many more Befriending Volunteers and Mentors to work closely with families and young people before they get to a stage of crisis.
We have a long waiting list of families wanting and needing our support, both in emotional terms and in terms of much needed relief from their social isolation. In particular, the young people in many of these families want educational mentoring to help keep them on track.
However, our biggest problem in providing such support is training enough volunteers for the numbers of families referred. The online Learning Portal was an idea proposed by our volunteers themselves.
Training Many More Volunteers
Currently volunteers are trained by attending three days of workshops, but getting all the people who are keen to volunteer to attend on the same days is near impossible. So to solve that problem providing an online Learning Portal is the perfect solution, and the National Lottery Community Fund thought so too.
It will allow potential volunteers to gain their training when it’s most convenient for them and so enable us to support more families than we can at present. With the help of the National Lottery Community Fund more vulnerable families in Westminster will be helped more quickly.
National Lottery Community Fund
The National Lottery Community Fund distributes over £600 million a year to communities across the UK. The money is raised by players of the National Lottery and with 90% of its awards being for £10,000 or less it means small, local charities like ours have a great chance of getting funding for special projects.
Thanks again to the National Lottery Community Fund and to National Lottery players for their generosity.
